NICOSIA: Police association president Andreas Symeou clarified on Wednesday that the three Greek Cypriot policemen detained by Turkish Cypriot authorities had entered the occupied areas by mistake.
He told CyBC radio that the three, who were pursuing a Turkish Cypriot driver who had failed to stop, had been confused by a lack of barbed wire and signs, and had mistakenly entered the occupied areas in Louroutzina.
He said that on entering the village, they had been stopped by a Turkish-Cypriot ‘policeman’ who spoke to them in Greek and told them that the area was under the control of the occupation regime and asked them to follow him to the ‘police station’.
Symeou expressed the hope that the police vehicle, and other equipment, would be returned soon.
The three policemen were released late on Tuesday after paying fines imposed by a civilian and a military ‘court’ in the Turkish held north.
