NICOSIA - Rubbish disposed of by municipalities in Cyprus in 2011 decreased by 2% compared to the previous year. According to the Statistical Service, it is estimated that the total amount of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2011 stood at 560 thousand tonnes compared to 572 thousand tonnes in 2010, recording a decrease of 2,0%. From the total amount generated in 2011, 80,2% was delivered to landfills, 8,6% was composted and the remaining 11,2% is estimated to have been collected for recycling. During 2010 (data for 2011 are not yet available), the amount of municipal solid waste generated per inhabitant in the European Union was 502 kg. In Cyprus, the per capita generation of municipal solid waste in 2010 reached 691 kg and is the highest among the member states of the EU. At similarly high levels as Cyprus are Luxembourg (678 kg), Denmark (673 kg) and Ireland (636 kg).
