LARNACA - Former Defence Minister Costas Papacostas at the Mari trial in Larnaca Tuesday placed blame for the Mari disaster on former President Christofias and his co accused former Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou.
The trial was resuming after 10 days due to the illness of one of the accused.
Papasostas said that Dimitris Christofias took charge of the matter because he considered it as a matter of utmost national security and only he was involved and not the then Cabinet.
Nobody gave the green light for the disposal of the cargo, and the Foreign Ministry had political responsibility for handling the matter he said.
Accused of causing death by failing to take precautions and negligent homicide are Papacostas, former foreign minister Marcos Kyprianou, former national guard deputy chief Savvas Argyrou, former fire service chief Andreas Nicolaou; deputy fire chief Charalambos Charalambous; and former disaster response squad commander Andreas Loizides.
