NICOSIA- Τhe Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued Friday noon a new travel advice for Egypt, advising Cypriot citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Egypt. In the previous travel advice issued last Wednesday, the Ministry was advising Cypriot citizens to avoid non-essential travel “to certain areas of Egypt”.
The Foreign Ministry also notes that if present in the country, the Cypriot citizens are advised to exercise caution and avoid public areas, where mass gatherings occur.
A Foreign Ministry officer told CNA that today the Ministry received many phone calls by citizens present in Egypt or people who are going to travel for holidays via Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh or other destinations. The situation remains tensed and citizens who have no serious reasons, they should avoid visiting the country, the officer noted.
He also said that there is an ongoing process of data collection on Cypriot citizens who are currently in Egypt, and those who will travel to the neighbouring country and the date of their traveling, so they will have an updated picture of the situation. Nobody until now is in danger, nor such information was given to the Ministry, he added.
Cypriot citizens are encouraged to keep abreast of local and international media coverage of events (especially the Internet) and to follow the instructions of the Authorities.
In case of emergency, FM informs Cypriot citizens that they may contact the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Cairo or/and the Duty Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on +357 99 660129 (outside normal working hours).
