A 35-year-old man was Tuesday arrested on suspicion of murder following the drive-by shooting of a taxi driver in the centre of Ayia Napa.
According to Famagusta police spokesman George Economou, 66-year-old Pantelis Antoniou was gunned down at around 12:45pm as he played backgammon with another man outside the taxi officer he worked in the costal resort’s centre.
Around a dozen people including tourists and colleagues of the victim witnessed the shooting.
Based on their testimony, a pick-up truck pulled up beside the pavement where the men were playing backgammon and the driver fired two shots at Antoniou before speeding off. The victim got up and took a few steps before collapsing on the ground.
He was rushed by ambulance to Famagusta General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
