A Russian tourist died of multiple injuries yesterday after he was hit by a propeller of a speed boat while swimming off Coral Bay in Paphos.
The freak accident occurred as the 35-year-old tourist was swimming approximately 1km from the coast with his 63-year-old father -- far from the designated swimming area marked by red flags, buoys and ropes
He was hit by a propeller of a speed boat that was pulling an inflatable craft.
The speed boat driver, a 35-year-old Cypriot said he heard a thump and seconds after a man screaming.
He drove back to see whether someone was in trouble
He found the victim’s father in shock and helped him and the heavily injured son to land.
The victim had injuries on most of one side of his body. He was taken to Paphos General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival .
The speed boat driver tested negative for alcohol.
The tourist arrived in Cyprus on September 29 for holiday with his parents and brother.
There have been several boating accidents in the past which have prompted local authorities to tighten up on safety lanes for water sports.
