NICOSIA – Nicolas Papadopoulos was elected new president of Diko early on Monday morning after a closely fought contest against incumbent Marios Garoyian.
At the end of a thriller night, Papadopoulos secured 51% of the votes to Garoyian’s 49%.
Counting continued into the early hours of the morning with numerous objections being lodged. Papadopoulos was declared new president around 3.00 am.
Son of the late president Tassos Papadopoulos, Nicolas is an MP and chairman of the House Finance Committee. A British-trained lawyer, he carried Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca. Garoyian won in Nicosia and among Famagusta refugees living in the free Famagusta area and those who voted in Larnaca.
Of a total of 38,605 members eligible to vote, 63% cast a ballot in Sunday's closely contested election.
