NICOSIA: British supervisory authorities have closed dozens of accounts considered high risk at Bank of Cyprus (UK) Central Bank governor Panicos Demetriades said on Tuesday.
Demetriades was replying to a question by Akel MP Irene Charalambides in the House Ethics Committee who asked whether U K authorities had closed down accounts at the Bank of Cyprus (UK).
The governor confirmed that 100 accounts had been closed, the majority of them belonging to Cypriots
It is understood that that the accounts belonged to politicians and state officers from Cyprus.
They were deemed high risk within the framework of money laundering checks, Demetriades said..
House Ethics Committee chairman Demetris Syllouris said the issue will be put to the attorney general Costas Clerides.
Charalambides said that UK authorities have been asked for information on the accounts which will be submitted to the Department of Inland Revenue.
