The Australian press has continued to allege that Alexander Downer, the country’s former foreign minister and now UN envoy for Cyprus, was behind a bugging operation against the Timorese cabinet back in 2004.
ABC Radio Australia said on its website yesterday: “This week Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is heading to Indonesia to try and salvage the international relationship; battered after reports its spy agencies had tried to bug the phones of the President and his wife”.
It added: “And yesterday (Monday) it was reported a retired spy was prepared to back up claims by the Timorese government that Australia's former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer ordered Australia's overseas spy agency ASIS to carry out a bugging operation against the Timorese cabinet”.
