Winter has arrived in Cyprus with a vengeance and last night 26 mountain communities were cut off from the outside world by heavy snow with more expected today.
Efforts to open the roads to the villages had to be abandoned as darkness fell, but were being resumed at daylight.
On the coldest day of the year so far temperatures were an average 10°C lower than usual for this time of year.
At noon yesterday, the Meterological Service reported temperatures of 5°C inland, between 6 and 7°C on the coast and -7°C in the mountains.
