NICOSIA - Cyprus’ unusually cold weather is set to continue Friday – the third consecutive day - with snow, rain, sleet and strong winds.
Around a dozen communities in the mountainous areas remain cut off due to the heavy snow while a number of schools will stay closed until the extreme weather conditions ease off.
Emergency services are on alert and will be working throughout the day to reopen access to cut-off areas.
According to the Meteorological Services, the low temperatures will rise by around 4°C by noon Saturday and will gradually increase over the following days.
Snow in Troodos Square is currently at 50cm while temperatures are at – 9°C. All roads leading to Cyprus’ highest mountain are currently closed.
Meanwhile, Nicosia on Thursday evening had its first glimpse of snow in several years with the white settling briefly in the suburban areas of Latsia and Dali and Aglandjia.
Police are urging members of public to avoid any unnecessary travel and to check road conditions before venturing out. Updates on road conditions can be seen on the police website: www.police.gov.cy
