LIMASSOL – A 45 year Austrian living permanently in Cyprus was killed in a car accident in Limassol early on Sunday morning. The victim was named as Herbert Nikes.
Police said the accident occurred at 3.20 in the morning on the Limassol coastal road in Yermasoyia. Under conditions still being investigated, the victim lost control of the car which hit an electricity pole on the traffic island in the road. Police said he died instantly. It appeared he had not been wearing his seat belt.
Police appealed to drivers to buckle up saying the man could have survived the crash if he was wearing his seat belt. The man was married to a Greek woman and was a father of two girls aged seven and six.
