More and more European tour operators and travel agents are showing an interest in civil marriages in the small town of Sotira in the free Famagusta district, the municipality said on Wednesday.
The tour operators have in the last few weeks been visiting free Famagusta's new municipality noting development and improvement on its beach front.
"Sotira has in the last few days seen visits from travel agents and tour operators organising civil marriages from Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Germany and the UK who have expressed a keen interest in cooperating with the municipality to organise civil marriages,"  said civil marriages officer Marinos Pavlikas.
It is important for a small municipality like Sotira to be able to tackle the economic crisis through a profitable and fast growing sector such as civil marriages," he added.
The municipality's civil marriages department has managed to stage more than 100 civil marriages during the first year of its operations. This number is expected to triple by 2015, considering the number of bookings that are already made.
"There is strong interest in areas where civil marriages are staged like the beaches of Ayia Thekla, Posidonas and Sirines," Pavlikas added.
Sotira municipality will participate in wedding exhibitions in Saint Petersburg and Birmingham in the next few months in order to promote its civil marriages department as much as possible.
