LARNACA -The Assizes Court sitting in Larnaca on Thursday sentenced thirty-eight year-old Pontian Greek Panayiotis Papadopoulos to 10 years behind bars for smuggling almost 12 kilos of cannabis from Amsterdam with intent to deliver it to a third person.<br /> The court heard that the defendant was paid €900 to smuggle in the drugs.<br /> The defendant arrived at Larnaca on a flight from Amsterdam via Athens on June 24, 2013 and the Drug Squad who had information on the case intervened at the passengers’ lounge.<br /> After checking a pink suitcase that the Pontian Greek was carrying two police officers found the drugs in 12 nylon bags.<br /> In his testimony the defendant said he had carried the drugs in order to obtain money to pay for an operation for his sick mother.
