LARNACA – Three men were remanded Friday in connection with an outbreak of football violence during the Digenis Oroklini – APOEL Cyprus cup match.
The suspects, aged 22, 23 and 24 were arrested outside Oroklini Stadium on Thursday.
The court heard that a group of around 50 APOEL supporters attempted to enter the stadium without tickets. When they were stopped by stadium staff the hooligans began pelting them with rocks. Eight policemen intervened and were attacked by the hooligans who in the meantime had armed themselves with wooden clubs and glass bottles. The officers were all admitted to hospital with minor injuries while one members of the force received 18 stitches for a cut to his head.
The case investigator said the suspects had been positively identified as part of the mob that attacked the officers. Further arrests in the case are expected to take place.
