Peyia Municipality carried out 650 civil weddings in 2013, making it one of the most popular wedding destinations in Cyprus and earning much needed revenue.
Maria Yiangou, the officer in charge of civil weddings at Peyia told the Cyprus News Agency that most weddings involved Britons and Russias, though there were also couples from Romania and even the United States.
Yiangou said the municipality was making great efforts to open up new markets through promotion campaigns both here and abroad, as well as through participation in wedding fairs held in the UK.
Looking ahead, she said that a 20% increase was anticipated for next year, while bookings have even started for 2015.
“We have bookings for 400 civil weddings for 2014, mostly from Britons.”
Yiangou said the area was ideal for weddings, whereas many foreigners were choosing to make Peyia their permanent home.
Civil weddings are held at select locations outside the Town Hall such as hotels, villas, Coral Bay and Peyia fountain.
The municipality will continue concerted efforts to build on success of the past, she added.
