NICOSIA – An earthquake measuring 5.9 points on the Richter scale was felt throughout Cyprus at around 5.20 on Saturday afternoon.. The Cyprus seismological centre said that the epicentre of the quake was Antalya, the Mediterranean coastal province of Turkey, 208 kilometres northwest of Nicosia. The preliminary magnitude was 5.9. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The quake was particularly noticeable in Nicosia, but was felt throughout the island. A spokeswoman from the Cyprus seismological centre said that that it was particularly felt in high buildings in Nicosia, with reports of small objects being displaced.
Meanwhile AP reported from Turkey that a magnitude-6 earthquake has struck in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the Turkish province of Antalya. No damage or casualties were reported.
The Istanbul-based Kandilli seismology centre said the earthquake occurred at 5:21 p.m. Saturday, and was centered some 84 kilometers southwest of the holiday resort of Alanya. It was also felt in the neighboring province of Mersin and on the island of Cyprus, AP reported.
