LONDON- Cypriot musician Marios Papadopoulos, founder and director of the Oxford Philomusica, on New Year’s Eve was named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. He was awarded an MBE for services to music in Oxford. Born in Limassol in 1954, Papadopoulos grew up in Nicosia and started learning to play the piano from the age of six.
When he was 12 his parents decided to move to England so that he could continue his piano classes. By 16 he had already appeared as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic at the Royal Albert Hall. Two years later he was named new musician of the year. He founded the Oxford Philomusica, the orchestra of the University of Oxford in 1998 and remains its musical director to the present
