NICOSIA-The report of the UN secretary general on the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp) focus on technical issues and makes no reference to his good services on efforts to seek a Cyprus settlement.
In his report that was informally given to the members of the Security Council on New Year’s Eve, Ban Ki Moon believes Unficyp plays a decisive role on the island, exercising power in the buffer zone, contributing to peace keeping and solving various problems arising from the daily lives of people from the two communities.
Ban Ki Moon asks for the renewal of the organisation’s term for another six months until July 31, 2014.
The secretary general notes that Unficyp’s capacity to play this role is to a large extent due to the commitment of the two sides to avoid disputing its power and legality in the buffer zone.
Ban Ki Moon expresses the hope that the two sides will continue to cooperate in good faith with Unficyp.
