NICOSIA – Minister of Defence Fotis Fotiou confirmed on Thursday that Limassol harbour is ready to welcome a Chinese frigate accompanying maritime transportation of Syria’s chemical weapons.
Speaking to the media after a meeting with Chinese ambassador to Cyprus Liu Xinsheng, Fotiou said that the Yan Cheng frigate will be arriving in Cyprus on Friday.
The minister informed the ambassador over the government’s decision to support the United Nations in its efforts to transport and destroy chemical weapons from Syria.
“As part of these efforts the Cypriot government will be providing assistance to the Chinese navy.”
Fotiou also assured that Cyprus would not allow any vessels transporting dangerous chemical weapons to dock in Cyprus’ waters.
The Yan Cheng will be the first ever Chinese military vessel to stop over in Cyprus.
Fotiou is scheduled to visit the frigate and meet its crew after its arrival on Friday.
