Celebrations will take place in churches across the island from today to mark Epiphany or Theofania, also known as the Feast of Light or Fota.
The celebration marks Christ’s baptism in the temple and the mankind’s purification and the focal point of the festival is when young men dive to retrieve the cross which is cast into the seaside water by the local Church prelate.
To catch the cross is an honour. It is then passed around to other swimmers so that they can kiss it for a blessing. Throngs of onlookers traditionally watch the ceremony from the harbour side.
