NICOSIA - Pupils will stay away from class for one period tomorrow in protest at having to pay €15 per month for school buses.
Pupils and parents are also expected to announce further action during a press conference today.
A one-day adjustment period—which meant some pupils could still travel for free depending on their bus driver’s discretion—resulted in pupils’ bus transportation to and from school going ahead without a hitch yesterday, the first day of the new fares scheme.
Speaking to The Cyprus Daily, Pupils Coordinating Committee (PSEM) president Panayiotis Monoyios said that not all bus drivers showed understanding: “On the bus I use for example, the driver took some persuading. It is sad that things have come to this, that pupils have to negotiate with their bus drivers on whether or not they had to pay.”
