The Forestry Department has announced that selling firewood without a license is a criminal offence and carries a prison sentence not exceeding one year or a fine of not more than €5,000 or both.
According to the current law, people with firewood in their possession have to have proof that it is legal. Absence of such proof carries an out-of-court fine up to €1,000.
The warning comes after an increase in illegal tree chopping for firewood during a recent cold snap.
