NICOSIA- An agreement is expected to be signed in the next few days to sell the Cyprus Airways night slot at Healthrow Airport in order to bring €15m into the cash-strapped national carrier.
Speaking to reporters after a blessing at the Cyprus Airways headquarters by Archbishop Chrysostomos, company chairman Tony Antoniou said the sale of the slot, which is a loss making venture, will bring sufficient cash to ensure its survival.
Noting that Cyprus Airways has not received any state funds for the last seven to eight months, Antoniou said:
“Therefore, this money is necessary for the airline’s survival during the winter period so that it can enter the profitable period which is the summer.”
Noting that Cyprus Airways will continue operating in 2014, he requested the public’s support to that it can fly with much lower fares.
Asked whether UAE’s national carrier Etihad has expressed an interest in Cyprus Airways, Antoniou said there are many airlines interested from the wider region of Cyprus, Europe, China and the Arabian Gulf.
