Nicosia does not expect any intervention by the UN Security Council during the scheduled meeting for the renewal of UNFICYP at the end of the month, should no breakthrough be made when the government resumes discussions next week with Turkish Cypriot negotiators over a joint communiqué between the two sides on the Cyprus problem talks.

According to sources quoted by CNA the UN Security Council will approve the renewal of its peacekeeping force in Cyprus when it meets on January 29, and the approval is not conditional to an agreement being found on the joint communiqué between the two sides.

Alexander Downer, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Cyprus, arrives on the island tomorrow and will have separate meetings with President Anastasiadis and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu on Monday.
