A prison inmate attempted to commit suicide yesterday raising further questions about the state of the island's prison service. The 19-year-old tried to hang himself using his bedsheets, but was saved by guards after fellow prisoners raised the alarm. He was then taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he is under observation.
Justice Minister Ioanas Nicolaou has ordered an investigation into the incident and has immediately suspended the guards who were on duty in that area of the prison following a series of alarming incidents in the last three months which have included three suicide attempts and the gang-rape of a Romanian inmate by four other prisoners.
