NICOSIA: Inmates rioted at Nicosia Central Prison on Sunday after a new suicide, only a day after a young convict was taken to hospital after trying to hang himself.
On Sunday, a prisoner was found hanging in his cell by other inmates in wing 1 of the Nicosia jail. He was cut loose by fellow prisoners and rushed to Nicosia hospital by ambulance but was declared dead on arrival.
CyBC said the man was a 40 year old inmate, serving a long sentence. It gave no more details.
On news of the latest incident, inmates rioted blaming the acting director of the prison for the situation there. Riot police were brought to the scene to restore order.
On Saturday, a 19 year old a prison inmate tried to hang himself using his bedsheets, but was saved by guards after fellow prisoners raised the alarm. He is under observation at Nicosia General Hospital.
Today’s is only the latest in a series of alarming incidents at the prison in the last three months which have included three suicides and the gang-rape of a Romanian inmate by four other prisoners.
On Sunday, President Anastasiades visited the Romanian rape victim at hospital. He said he had wanted to encourage the young man to come forward with the truth and not to fear any threat.
The president said he was furious with the situation in the prison and promised that action would be taken and responsibilities apportioned for the bestial behaviour.
