Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou yesterday flew to Israel for the state funeral of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon who died on Saturday at the age of 85.
At the same time, President Anastasiades in a condolence message to the Israeli government described Sharon as an instrumental figure in shaping Israel’s history.
Anastasiades also wrote: “Ariel Sharon was a leader of strong convictions and character, and has left an indelible mark”.
Fotiou joined Israeli and world leaders who paid respects to Sharon at the official ceremony at the Knesset. Accompanied by the Cyprus ambassador to Israel, Fotiou also went to Sycamore Ranch, Sharon's farm in the Negev, where the former strongman was buried.
Keynote speeches were delivered at the funeral ceremony by President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
Sharon spent the last eight years in a coma caused by a massive stroke.
