NICOSIA – There has been a new suicide at Nicosia Central Prison, the fifth in just a few months, Phileleftheros’ website reported on Tuesday.
It said that a Bulgarian inmate had been found dead in his cell at around 3.00 am on Tuesday morning. It added that the inmate was serving 12 years for rape. This is the fifth suicide at the prison in the past few months and comes only hours after a spate of new measures were unveiled to put an end to the deplorable situation at the prison.
On Monday a prison official and seven guards were suspended with two more set to follow.
The suspensions were part of a series of measures announced by Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou after a weekend of unrest at the prisons prompted by the alleged gang rape of a young inmate.
A MMAD police rapid response unit will maintain a presence and be responsible for the monitoring of all prison areas. The exclusive responsibility for handling the prison’s CCTV system has also been given to MMAD which will, in addition, temporarily search prison staff as they arrive at and leave work.
