Judge Marina Papadopoulos had found the Briton – a resident of Nicosia – guilty in absentia of charges relating to possession of illegal graphic images of minors. This week, the court hard how the man had given the authorities the slip by violating his bail conditions and escaping the island via the airport in Tympou [Ercan] in the Turkish occupied north.
Interpol had given Cypriot police the details of the man after he was observed downloading indecent images of children in November 2010. He had pleaded not guilty and ordered to stand trial on June 17 last year.
But he never turned up for his court date and an arrest warrant was issued against him. Police officers later turned up at his home address but were informed by neighbours that he had quit his job and left.
The man’s defense attorney had previously told the court that he had no ideas as to his whereabouts. Prosecutors had been informed that the defendant had fled Cyprus.
