NICOSIA - UNFICYP's spokesman on Thursday dismissed reports that the Secretary General’s special envoy on Cyprus Alexander Downer is due to become Australia’s new High Commissioner to the UK.
This woudl mean that the embattled mediator would leave his envoy position early, according to Philenews.
Nontheless, UNFICYP also said that his contract has been renewed for another six months.
Although he cited personal reasons, Downer reportedly postponed his visit to Cyprus earlier this week by 48 hours after President Anastasiades told a newspaper that he had lost trust in the Australian diplomat.
The former Australian Foreign Minister has come under fire, particularly from the Greek Cypriot side for lacking objectivity in his mission.
