A 54-year-old Bulgarian woman has been taken into police custody after she was identified as the driver of a hit and run accident that occurred last week.
The woman was arrested on Wednesday and was yesterday taken to a Nicosia court where she was remanded in custody for five days.
The victim of the accident was 22 year-old cyclist Alexandru Crucianu, originally from Romania, who died after an accident on Gregoris Afxentiou Avenue in Kokkinotrimithia at around 6.45pm on Sunday.
According to a police report, Crucianu was thrown from his bike, landing some distance away in a roadside field. The driver of the car abandoned the scene.
Having been alerted by concerned friends of Crucianu, the police searched and found him lying unconscious in a field at 8.15pm. He was rushed to Nicosia General Hospital where on duty doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
