A man was yesterday remanded in custody for eight days on suspicion of stabbing his father Christodoulos Melanides to death with a kitchen knife.
The 34-year-old is suspected of stabbing the victim in a rage 41 times, including in the lungs. State pathologist Eleni Antoniou said 11 wounds appear to be defensive. The family drama unfolded at a farm in Meniko at 6.30 pm on Saturday when the suspect allegedly attacked the 58-year-old while he was sleeping and later called 199 to report the incident.
Police rushed to the scene where they took the suspect into custody. The victim died on his way to hospital.
Meniko community leader Andreas Kalogirou said the victim lived alone on his farm in appalling conditions and was said to have had differences with his son.
The suspect, who appeared in a Nicosia court yesterday without a lawyer, said he did not mean to kill his father and that the incident occurred after a fight.
He has had previous run-ins with the police on accounts of burglary and theft, and had spent time in prison. The suspect had also been investigated in connection to an attempted murder.
Authorities are investigating a case of premeditated murder as the victim was asleep at the time of the attack.
Nicosia police officer Michalis Gavrielides said there were family issues linked to the murder and that the victim had tried to defend himself unsuccessfully.
The 34-year-old has been examined by a psychiatrist and is under constant surveillance.
