A satisfactory number of motorists have renewed their road tax ahead of the deadline this year, the Ministry of Communications confirmed on Tuesday.
According to official data, by January 20 this year, 223,092 drivers (34%) renewed their road tax compared to 173,005 (26%) for the same period in 2013.
“The Ministry of Communications wishes to thank motorists for their understanding and high level of cooperation,” an announced said. The remaining drivers are being urged to renew their road tax before February 9 as no extension will be given on the deadline this year.
From February 10 motorists who have not complied with the law will face a €30 fine plus 10% of the cost their annual road tax.
Meanwhile, according to the Road Transport Department (RTD), thousands of motorists have this year opted to take their cars off the roads rather pay road tax in the current financial difficulties. One in 13 drivers have officially registered their cars as immobilised, based on recent data.
Road tax can be renewed online at the RTD website at http://rtd.mcw.gov.cy or at any commercial bank.
