NICOSIA - Cyprus unemployment jumped to 17.5% in December 2013, the biggest yearly increase in the European Union, according to figures released by Eurostat on Friday.
This corresponds to 78,000 people out of work compared to 62,000 or 13.9% in December 2012.
Cyprus has the third highest unemployment rate in the EU28, after Greece with 27.8% and Spain with 25.8%.
Among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.9%), Germany (5.1%) and Luxembourg (6.2%).
Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate increased in 14 Member States, fell in 13 and remained stable in Sweden.
