Five new kitchens have been built in schools around the island to expand the Sophia Foundation’s feeding programme with the help of various organisations and individuals including ‘The Circle of Hope’ event organised by Myrna Pattichis and the Phileleftheros Group in December 2013.
According to the foundation, the kitchens are in the final stages of construction and the first two schools in Yiolou and Chirokitia will be ready to launch the feeding programme in the first week of February.
The Sophia Foundation launched the “I Cook and I Offer” feeding programme for school children in September 2013 in Sotera, building fully equipped kitchens and recruiting unemployed mothers to cook for all the school’s children as part of efforts to feed needy children without stigmatising them.
The new kitchens in Yiolou and Chirokitia will be inaugurated on February 7, followed by Apsiou all-day school on February 11 and Erimi and Apesia by the end of the month.
All proceeds from ‘The Circle of Hope’ charity event organised by Myrna Pattichis and the Phileleftheros Media Group in December went to support the cause and according to the foundation can fund the feeding programme for a whole year.
The proceeds from the event came from the auction of 230 pashminas decorated by celebrities from Greece and Cyprus, as well as donations from private companies, which have also helped to set up the kitchens.
The construction of the kitchens was funded by the Shacolas Group at Yiolou all-day school, Vasilikos cement factory at Chirokitia Nursery and Primary school and Adonis Yiangou and Marina Vrionides at Apsiou all-day primary school.
The largest of the six school kitchens at Erimi all-day primary school was funded by the Bank of Cyprus, while Apesia all-day primary school kitchen was built with a donation by the Nasos Ktorides Foundation.
A kitchen at Kyperounta all-day primary school will follow funded by Phileleftheros Media Group, while it was announced that Noble Energy has also donated the amount of €5,000 to support the feeding programme.
