LARNACA : Foreign  Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said on Monday Cyprus was proud to be contributing to the operation to remove chemical weapons from Syria was essential..
In statements after visiting the Danish frigate “HDMS Esbern Snare” in Larnaca, Kasoulides said the frigate, together with Chinese and Norwegian ships, are accompanying the tankerscarrying the dismantled chemical weapons cache from Syria to a port near Calabria where they are collected by an American ship.
The procedure, he said, is being closely monitored in cooperation with the World Health Organisation, the UN organization to protect the environment and many scientists who are on the ships where the operation is taking place.
The FM underlined that there are no chemical weapons aboard the ships as the chemicals were dismantled and cease to be weapons.
He assured that under no circumstances will any chemicals be dumped in the water.
Kasoulides criticised Syria for delaying the process.
Referring to Cyprus’ contribution, he said that the ships are waiting at Cyprus ports to be called at anytime to go to Syria, noting “our contribution allows us to feel proud that we can contribute to this very important cause”.
