House Refugee committee on Wedensday called on the government to take the necessary steps in preventing Turkey's project to transfer water from Mersin to a dam in the occupied village of Panagra in the north.
MPs have expressed concern that the €75 million project is a camouflaged effort to annex the north of the island and establish its geo-strategic role in the region.
According to committee chairman Skevi Koukouma, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015, while the immersion of the water pipe is expected in September.
Koukouma noted that Turkey has launched a campaign to locate the Greek Cypriot owners of the land affected by the project, urging them to resort to the so-called property committee for compensation.
Based on information presented before the committee, she explained that the project will allow Turkey to sell water to the Republic of Cyprus and other countries in the region, while it will initially be sold to Turkish Cypriots.
