NICOSIA – President Anastasiades said on Thursday that efforts are still underway to reach agreement on a joint communiqué that will pave the way for a Cyprus settlement.
He said that there were “today serious prospects of a joint communiqué which satisfy the basic principles of the Cyprus issue which can lead to talks.”
It is now up to the Turkish Cypriots to agree, he added.
The president said that consensus and unity on the home front were of paramount importance, adding “I recommend patience and self-restraint.’”.
He said he will address the people on the true content of the declaration and the thinking and legal interpretation behind it once consultations have been completed with political leadership and the Greek government.
Anastasiades spoke after meeting political party leaders on the issue. Anastasiades leaves for Athens later on Thursday where on Friday he will hold talks with the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
