A delegation from the Green Party Youth on Thursday handed the amount of €285 to the Makarios Hospital Child Oncology ward which was collected during a charity fundraiser, but none of the hospital's officials were willing to receive the cheque.
Secretary for Green Youth Alexia Sadakaki told The Cyprus Daily that the fundraiser 'we support children in pain - no to the folly of limousines' was a protest against the limousine perks of government officials, where 51 model limousines and cars were sold.
"Apart from its social contribution, the event was also a complaint against the folly of limousines and the unbearable ego of limousine-owning state officials, who have no consideration for the difficult times of tax-paying Cypriots asked to pay for their obsolete privileges," the Greens said.
The Greens decided to support children suffering from cancer by offering the money to the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre in Nicosia.
However, during yesterday's arranged meeting to hand over the cheque, the head of the department who was expected to collect the cheque was unable to attend, while the rest of the hospital executives asked the delegation to hand the cheque over to the cash desk to collect their receipt. They refused to be photographed.
"At first we were quite annoyed as the event had been pre-planned but in the end we just handed the money over to the cash desk… the important thing is that the money goes to help the children," Sadakaki said.
