Chairman Wine Products Council Panicos Chambas and the Ambassador of Cuba, Aramis Fuentes Rodriguez recently visited vineyards and wineries in the wine-producing villages of Limassol District.
The visit came within the framework of promoting the modern wine sector of the island and offered an  opportunity to winemakers and council services to inform the Ambassador about the progress noted in the sector on a daily basis.
Wineries are now situated in vineyards which gives them a significant advantage in the production of upgraded quality wines.
Cypriot wines based on indigenous varieties of grapes and complemented with quality foreign varieties, create a range of wines worthy of competing with European wines.
The Ambassador was presented with a historical account on wine as well as the important role Cyprus holds in the world map of vines which are free from the phylloxera disease as well as the important position held by indigenous varieties.
Along with quality wines, the uniqueness of Cyprus' Zivania and Commandaria which stands as one of the best products worldwide, the wine sector in Cyprus has excellent prospects.
The ambassador warmly thanked the council for hosting him and transferred his positive impressions of what he saw from the vineyards and excellent wines tasted at the wineries.
He also noted the high quality of Cypriot wines, Zivania and Commandaria.
Chambas stressed to the ambassador that Cyprus is ready to help the Cuban government in this sector, within the framework of the intergovernmental agreement that exists between the two states.
