NICOSIA- With Cabinet due to discuss a bill opening the way for the privatisation of profitable semi-government organisations including the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta,) the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and the Ports Authority, Cyta employees are staging a three-hour work stoppage from 9am Thursday.
Cyta staff are also staging a protest outside the Presidential Palace as the Cabinet debates the bill. It Thursday remained unclear which way the ministers belonging to Diko would be voting.
Speaking to reporters, Cyta employee union leaders noted that their members had shown their support for society time and time again, including contributing part of their pension funds to prevent the state from going bankrupt.
Thursday’s action follows an EAC employee three-hour work stoppage on Wednesday and potentially comes ahead of a 24-hour work stoppage on Friday.
