School bus fares have been reduced from €15-€20 per month to €10 but includes all journeys outside class time.
Communications Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos said he hoped the change would encourage more pupils to use the buses without jeopardising the funds the state hopes to raise through the new fares. Previously school bus transportation was free.
Pupils, parents and teachers were against the introduction of the €15 monthly fare, protesting the move which was implemented from January 7.
Mitsopoulos said that the €10 youth card is the minimum fare that they could apply considering the country’s financial plight.
He said that primary school and pre-school kids whose parents receive state benefits and large families with more than two children in education are exempt from paying the fare.
The reduced bus fares hope to encourage youth to use public transport as this will also contribute to an increase in revenue for public buses.
