NICOSIA -- Winter gripped Cyprus on Saturday with heavy snow falling in the Troodos Mountains and hail and rain reported in the Larnaca and Nicosia districts.
Police said that because of heavy snowfall in the Troodos Mountains roads were open only to vehicles with snow chains or four wheel drive. Drivers are being warned to be particularly careful.
Also police said that the Lefkara-Vavatsinia road had become dangerous because of hail and urged drivers to exercise caution.
There were hail storms also in villages in the Nicosia district
Cyprus is being affected by a low pressure system with more rain expected overnight, falling as snow in the higher reaches of the Troodos mountains.
On Sunday the weather will be partly cloudy at first, later clearing. Temperatures will be 19 degrees Celsius inland and in the coastal areas and 8 in the mountains.
