LIMASSOL - Six men were remanded in police custody for six days on Tuesday for alleged involvement in a people smuggling operation.
Police said officers stopped a vehicle for speeding near Kofinou on the Nicosia to Limassol highway at 8.20pm on Monday and arrested the 39-year-old Greek Cypriot driver after it emerged that his six passengers were illegal immigrants from Syria.
During police questioning the Syrians said they got into Cyprus via occupied Kyrenia after being transported on a fishing boat from Mersina in Turkey. They claimed they each paid €2,000 to be smuggled into the island.
The Greek Cypriot suspect claims the Syrian men are hitchhikers that he picked up on the highway and denies involvement in the crime. Kofinou police station is investigating the case.
