Cypriot workers at the British bases started a 24-hour strike on Tuesday in protest against pay cuts and austerity measures taken by the bases administration.
Protestors blocked the entrance to Akrotiri bases for approximately two hours. There was tension when the bases authorities attempted to intervene. The workers then decided to free the entrance and there were no further incidents.
Chairman of the unions’ coordinative committee on British bases issues Christos Djapouras said that the British were taking advantage of the financial conditions on the island, by unilaterally breaching the collective agreements with cuts to Cypriots’ benefits, while British workers received pay rises in August.
He also said that in the last four years the British have fired 350 Cypriots and hired British dependants to fill the positions.
