Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos said yesterday that the government intends to take legal action against people who collectively owe €4 million in unpaid rent for use of Turkish Cypriot properties.
Hasikos stressed that some cases of overdue rent are inexcusable due to the non implementation of the legislation.
He said measures will be taken both at district administration and ministry level to collect the amount.

He was speaking during a meeting with the office responsible for managing Turkish Cypriot property in the government controlled areas to discuss various issues including the need to move staff and make other structural changes.
Hasikos said that drastic changes are necessary and called a meeting for next Friday with deputy director of the service Mary Lambrou and the heads of the district administrations to discuss their proposals. He also said that Turkish Cypriot farming land will be redistributed in order to achieve fairer allocations by taking into account the property of displaced beneficiaries in the occupied areas. Other changes to representatives on the Turkish Cypriot property advisory committee as well as the special district committees are also imminent, according to the minister.
