NICOSIA –There were scuffles outside Parliament on Monday during a protest against the privatisation of semi-government organisations (SGOs).
Demonstrators pushed down police barriers and pelted riot officers with firecrackers, stones, bottles of water and fruit.
Speaking to the media, Head of trade union EPOPAI Andreas Panorkos said further protest action will be announced on Tuesday unless the law proposal for the privatisation of SGOs is withdrawn from House where it is currently under discussion.
A number of police officers and demonstrators suffered minor injuries in the protest.
A reporter on the scene said that demonstrators had cut off the electricity to the parliament building.  It appears that House Finance Committee has suspended its proceedings because of the troubles outside.
