They may look like a couple of jobbing painters but these two are wizards who turn ideas into evocative settings that transport adults and children to magical places.
Craig Balmer and Reg Vrahimis are magicians who create the environment for actors in the Dhekelia Theatre Club.
Now in the final stages of the club's latest joint production, 'Oliver!', Craig Balmer (left), the Technical Director for the production and Design Technology lecturer at Dhekelia's King Richard School, supported by Reg Vrahimis (right) holder of a Master's Degree in Art, have been tackling the complex scenery sets required for this moody, musical, action-packed production.
Jo Hillman the producer and director, is famous for her meticulously directed, dramatic, large-scale, musicals Shehas teamed up with King Richard School's talented students, teachers, as well as adult members of Dhekelia Garrison and ex-pats, for her latest and last musical extravaganza in Cyprus.
For the backroom artists, her demands are challenging to say the least.
But the scenery team have risen and surpassed the challenges in the past and are on plan to astound the audience once more.
Craig and Reg have used the latest technology and their skills to produce intimate scenes to support the actors.
Their finale set will stun the audience. With a total of ten volunteers supporting their efforts, the finale will feature a deep and moody set of flats around three metres high that will split London in two and cover the whole stage.
The size of the wall in their hanger-sized workshop, the massive set splits old London town in half, one side featuring the River Thames and London Bridge; the other half, the roof tops surrounding St Paul's Cathedral.
To achieve the artistic effect, Craig researched old London and made sketches and coloured drawings.
These have been put onto slides which were projected onto the scenery flats arranged along the wall of their workshop. Standing on ladders, the two artists then sketched in the outlines and added colour to match the drawings.
You will be able to see the results as the evil Bill Sykes starts his escape. With music by Lionel Bart including favourites such as Consider Yourself, As Long as He Needs Me, and Pick a Pocket or Two, this promises entertainment on a grand scale.
The music-packed production will by Jo Hillmans' last and promises to be her best.
Performances will be in Dhekelia's Key Cinema on March 27, 28 and 29.
