LARNACA -- Police said on Sunday that excessive speed and the driver’s failure to wear his seat belt were responsible for the new fatality that occurred in Larnaca late on Saturday.
The 28 year old Romanian was killed when he failed to stop and his car crashed into the barrier of Rizoelia roundabout. His 27 year old wife was injured and is in hospital.
Spokesman Andreas Angelides said the driver had earlier failed to stop when flagged down by police in Koshi. He had been driving at 140 km/hour. The speed limit is 100 km/hour. Angelides said that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Police are also examining when he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
“The first cause of the accident was excessive speed and second whether he was under the influence of alcohol,” said Angelides.
He noted that the wife who was wearing a seatbelt had survived the crash.
“He was not wearing a seatbelt and unfortunately lost his life,” he added.
